Young people from across Mganduzweni came together on 16 June 2026 to commemorate Youth Day through a vibrant celebration that promoted unity, youth empowerment, health awareness and community participation.

The event began with a peaceful march from Mganduzweni Station to the Mganduzweni Community Development Centre, where young people, community members and various organisations gathered to honour the legacy of the students who took part in the 1976 Soweto Uprising.

Youth Day is observed annually in South Africa to remember the bravery and sacrifice of thousands of learners who protested against the apartheid education system on 16 June 1976. Many young people lost their lives or were injured while fighting for their right to quality education and freedom.

The celebration was made possible through the collaboration of the Masoyi Facilitators, Management and Peer Educators, together with the Mganduzweni Community Development Centre, the Black Child Organisation and the Department of Health.

Opening the event, organiser Prince Nyundu welcomed attendees and encouraged young people to enjoy the day.

“This event was not organised for me or for my organisation it was organised for you, the youth of Mganduzweni,” he said. “Don’t go home without enjoying yourselves. Let’s celebrate together, dance, sing, have fun and remember the importance of Youth Day.”

The programme featured a variety of activities, including motivational talks, poetry, music, cultural performances and health awareness initiatives. Young people were given an opportunity to express themselves, showcase their talents and reflect on their role in building a better future.

Representing IHPS, Mbali Nkosi highlighted the health services available to young people, including HIV testing, TB screening, STI screening, family planning and access to PrEP.

“Our goal is to help young people access the healthcare services they need and make informed decisions about their health,” she said.

The audience was entertained by several talented performers. Highlights included a singing performance by Ezaselangeni Gwijo Squad, poetry presentations by Rafi Poetry, Thando Sibande and Ngomane, a modelling showcase by Chantel Ngobeni, an inspiring speech by Almighty Ndlovu and energetic performances from local dancers.

Speaking during the event, Bonginkosi from Smart Recycling encouraged young people not to allow their backgrounds to limit their dreams.

“Even if you come from a poor family, it is still possible to succeed in life. Your background should not stop you from working hard and achieving your goals,” he said.

He also praised the organisers for hosting a Youth Day celebration without alcohol.

“Young people can come together, have fun, learn and celebrate in a positive and responsible way. This is a good example for the community and for the youth,” he added.

The event was widely praised for promoting youth development, strengthening partnerships among organisations and creating a safe space where young people could learn, celebrate and access important services.

As the day came to an end, participants left inspired, informed and motivated to become positive agents of change in their communities, making the 2026 Youth Day celebration in Mganduzweni a memorable
